Certification Services from Euro Veritas, UK (www.euroveritas.com) accreditated from BAR-UK As per Procedure Scheme No. EVL/EnMS/C-A/3640/C-4

ISO 50001:2018 is an International Standard which specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system (EnMS). The intended outcome is to enable an organization to follow a systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance and the EnMS.

The Standard ISO 50001:2018:

   a) is applicable to any organization regardless of its type, size, complexity, geographical location, organizational culture or the products and services it provides;

   b) is applicable to activities affecting energy performance that are managed and controlled by the organization;

   c) is applicable irrespective of the quantity, use, or types of energy consumed;

   d) requires demonstration of continual energy performance improvement, but does not define levels of energy performance improvement to be achieved;

   e) can be used independently, or be aligned or integrated with other management systems.

HISTORY AND FAMILY OF ISO 50001 / ISO 50000 family:

The ISO 50001 family Since ISO 50001 was first published in 2011 for Energy management and energy savings. There are various other standards in the ISO 50000 family- to complete the energy management and energy savings family.

These include:

   • ISO 50002, Energy audits – Requirements with guidance for use

   • ISO 50003, Energy management systems – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of energy management systems

   • ISO 50004, Energy management systems – Guidance for the implementation, maintenance and improvement of an energy management system

   • ISO 50006, Energy management systems – Measuring energy performance using energy baselines (EnB) and energy performance indicators (EnPI) – General principles and guidance

   • ISO 50007, Energy services – Guidelines for the assessment and improvement of the energy service to users

   • ISO 50015, Energy management systems – Measurement and verification of energy performance of organizations – General principles and guidance

   • ISO 50047, Energy savings – Determination of energy savings in organizations

   • ISO 17741, General technical rules for measurement, calculation and verification of energy savings of projects

   • ISO 17742, Energy efficiency and savings calculation for countries, regions and cities

   • ISO 17743, Energy savings – Definition of a methodological framework applicable to calculation and reporting on energy savings

   • ISO/IEC 13273-1, Energy efficiency and renewable energy sources – Common international terminology – Part 1: Energy efficiency

   • ISO/IEC 13273-2, Energy efficiency and renewable energy sources – Common international terminology – Part 2: Renewable energy sources

DEVELOPING AN ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

ISO 50001:2018 is based on the High Level Structure Annex SL / Annex L of ISO, also used for other well-known standards such as ISO 9001:2015 or ISO 14001:2015. This makes it easier for organizations to integrate energy management into their overall efforts and existing System / Management System for continual improvement.

ISO 50001 provides a framework of requirements for organizations to:

   • Develop a policy for more efficient use of energy

   • Fix targets and objectives to meet the policy

   • Use data to better understand and make decisions about energy use

   • Measure the results

   • Review how well the policy works, and

   • Continually improve energy management.

What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 Energy management systems – Requirements with guidance for use (or simply “ISO 50001”) is the international energy management standard that was published in June 2011, and last revised in 2018 and represents the effort of various countries from around the world to develop an international best practice to help organizations better manage energy. Many economies, companies, organizations have adopted ISO 50001:2018.

Analysis show that implementation of ISO 50001 across the commercial and industrial sectors globally could drive cumulative energy savings by 7 – 15%, saving billions in energy costs and avoiding tones of CO2 emissions. The projected annual emissions savings in 2030 are equivalent to removing 215 million passenger vehicles from the road.

Benefits of EnMS and ISO 50001 Certification from Euro Veritas, UK (www.euroveritas.com) accreditated from BAR-UK

EnMS adoption represents a strategic investment in sustainability and profitability. Businesses use EnMS to achieve and sustain large energy savings, optimize processes, boost competitiveness, and reduce risk. Governments support use of EnMS to help meet their policy goals for energy efficiency, energy security, economic growth, and climate change/carbon emission reductions.

Why ISO 50001? Euro Veritas, UK (www.euroveritas.com) accreditated from BAR-UK

   • ISO 50001 is a proven standard. Its implementation leads to reduced energy use and increased productivity and competitiveness.

   • ISO 50001 is business-friendly. Organizations adopting the ISO 50001 standard are realizing initial energy improvements of 7 - 15% or more and achieving net cost savings, mostly through low-cost or no-cost changes to operations. A significant number of companies are already familiar with other ISO management system standards (e.g., ISO 9001:2015 and 14001:2015), substantially strengthening the potential for private sector, SMEs, etc uptake and integration into sustainability strategies.

   • ISO 50001 is already being adopted globally. The standard is an accepted and trusted means to energy savings with robust measurement and verification to support climate reductions.

   • The standard enables transparent progress on meeting climate commitments. The COP21 agenda called for globally relevant and transparent benchmarks for measuring progress toward international climate commitments. As an international standard developed in partnership with over 50 countries, ISO 50001 meets this need. Complementary policies and programs for IS0 50001 already exist in key markets such as China, India, the United States, and the European Commission. Direct links can be made between existing programs and new domestic and international climate requirements and commitments.

   • Implementation and certification effects from Euro Veritas, UK (www.euroveritas.com) accreditated from BAR-UK enduring change and impacts. ISO 50001 helps such organizations go beyond a simple project-based approach to energy efficiency. By embedding strategic energy management as an integral business practice, companies ensure that energy efficiency opportunities are continually realized and energy gains endure and grow over time.

CERTIFICATION TO ISO 50001 FROM Euro Veritas, UK (www.euroveritas.com) accreditated from BAR-UK

Like other ISO management system standards, certification to ISO 50001 is possible from Euro Veritas, UK (www.euroveritas.com) accreditated from BAR-UK. Some organizations decide to implement the standard solely for the benefits it provides. Others decide to get certified to it, to show external parties they have implemented an energy management system.

Is ISO 50001 certification right for me?

ISO 50001 certification is right if you and your organization want to take control and advantage of the way you use energy and manage the related costs more effectively. It is particularly beneficial for organizations with significant energy expenditure.

If you already hold certification to ISO 14001:2015, the ‘basic framework’ is already there and the benefits of ISO 50001 are within reach. If you already have an ISO 14001 environmental management system in place, then you are already on route to ISO 50001 compliance.

Transition to ISO 50001:2018

All ISO 50001:2011 certificates need to be transitioned into ISO 50001:2018 within Sept 2021. Whilst this may seem a long way off, we recommend that an early start to the process would be beneficial. We at Euro Veritas, UK (www.euroveritas.com) accreditated from BAR-UK recommend therefore starting to prepare for the transition as early as possible and plan properly to incorporate needed changes into your management system.

Specifically we suggest that you:

   • Procure the copy of the 2018 version standard.

   • Ensure that relevant staff within your organization are trained and understand the requirements and key changes to the standard.

   • Identify gaps which need to be addressed to meet the new requirements and establish an implementation plan. Implement those actions and update your management system to meet the new requirements.

   • Evaluate the effectiveness of implementation through internal audits and the NQA transition gap analysis form which will be available soon.
